Second Time Hypno-Mom Advocates for her Water Birth

4/13/2018

As a second time Hypno-mom, I was excited to get back into class and remember all of my hypno tricks (aka tracks and cues).  I had had an amazing and successful first birth using Hypnobabies and knew I wanted the same experience. Once class started it was tougher to find the time for the home play with a toddler running around but I knew how important it was.  Each day I was always happy I did it and felt at peace…. Usually so at peace I took a quick nap 😊

I had my 39 week check in on Tuesday with my midwife and as always they asked if I wanted to be checked and I declined as it was part of my birth plan to not know any ‘numbers’.  She said baby was head down but hadn’t really ‘dropped.’ She said that his head wasn’t quite in the right position and was sitting in my hip. She started talking about ‘the plan’ if my birthing time hadn’t started by the following week.  I just went into my bubble of peace and smiled. I knew that wasn’t what I had planned for and I wasn’t worried. Baby would come on his own schedule. But at that point I was ready to have this baby so I started to look at Spinning Babies.  I started doing inversions a couple times a day and walked a ton! When my husband was home in the evening and I was having practices waves, we did the lift and tuck technique to help baby get into a better position. Nothing really happened.

On Friday I got up and went to work for a half day.  I came home, had some lunch, and took a nap. I got up and didn’t feel quite ‘right’ so I sat down before going to get my son from daycare.  About 15 minutes later I had my first wave and I got a little excited. That was about 3:45. I texted my husband and asked him if he was ready to wrap up his day and asked if he would grab our son on his way home.  I then added ‘because I think we are going to have a baby tonight.’ I also notified our doula and told her to be on alert and called our midwives. I found out that our normal midwives were not there but that another one was coming to cover.  Bubble of peace=no worries.

I immediately grabbed my headphones and put on the birthing day affirmations track.  My waves continued to progress but were totally manageable with my peace and relax cues.  My husband got home with our son a little before 5 and I was doing pretty good. We decided to do an early dinner and then take my son to our cousins as planned.  I had to stop a few times during dinner and use the finger drop technique as my waves were starting to pick up. By the time dinner was over, I told my husband that he needed to go drop off our son.  This was a little before 6. By the time he got back home around 6:30 I told him it was time to go to the hospital. I had planned on waiting until my water broke but I knew that things were progressing and I needed to get there.  I was also planning a water birth and wanted to get in that tub!

I remember the drive to the hospital. I was listening to my tracks with my eyes closed but I could tell the direction we were going and gave him a hard time for taking the long way around.  It was great to be able to be light hearted during this intense time that didn’t really feel that intense. We parked and walked in, stopping a few times along the way for waves. We checked in at 7:05 and went straight up to L&D.  Our doula was waiting for us. We got into the room and they started monitoring baby. Our midwife came in and we gave her our birth plan and talked about the water birth. <BUBBLE OF PEACE> She was concerned because I had had a postpartum hemorrhage with my first and didn’t think it was a good idea to do the water birth because of potential complications.  *Note: I had had a retained placenta so the likelihood of a complication was very small and I had talked to my doula and midwives about this* <END BUBBLE OF PEACE>

I remained calm and told her that I had talked with my midwives about it; they had no concerns and that I wanted to do it. She left to go call my midwife. I felt very confident about what I wanted and did not let her concerns bother me.  Thank you Hypnobabies classes and education for teaching me what I needed to know and making me confident in my decisions.

I was checked for the first time and was at an 8 although I did not learn that until later.  I asked if I could get in the tub and they started getting it ready. They got my husband a cup of coffee because he said he had a long night ahead. I got in the tub which felt great but my waves were getting really intense. Previously I had headphones on but at this point we played the tracks for the whole room.  After a few minutes in the tub I felt my water break. Good thing I hadn’t waited to come because a few minutes later I felt the urge to push. My husband, who thought we still had a few hours to go, was surprised when the midwife came back and started to get her long gloves on. 😊

I started to push, my husband and doula by my side repeating my peace cue and reading scripts that I had picked out.  At one point I started to breath very rapidly. My husband knew I needed to calm down. He got my attention, he had to yell a little because I was in my zone, and told me to take a deep breath.  I was able to refocus and get back into my hypnosis. A few minutes later at 8:15 my baby boy was born. He was perfect and I was so happy to have had another amazing birth experience thanks to Hypnobabies.
