Can I really do this? First time mom, home water birth

Home birth and Hypnobabies went hand in hand for me, I could not have done one without the other. Early on in my first pregnancy my chiropractor and friend mentioned a home birth midwife and everything about birthing at home seemed right. As I began to show, and people knew that I was indeed pregnant, the question began to arise “So, where are you giving birth?”, especially since I work in a hospital! The surprised reactions and horror stories, began to stir around in my mind, “should I really be doing this?”, “am I brave enough”, “should births really be in the hospital?”, “can I really do this?!” Enter in Hypnobabies...
A colleague of mine mentioned her great experience so I followed suit. My husband, always open to what I want to explore, was at first a bit hesitant about dedicating 20 hours of precious summer time on Sundays, but he did it!

The classes were a nice combination of information. I found myself excited to return each week and learn more about the pregnancy and birth process. I followed through with about 75% of the homework. I would listen to a track over my lunch break at work and then at night. I always always “fell asleep” while listening. It became a nice bedtime routine, a time that otherwise could have been a time to race around in my thoughts about the pregnancy and our future. I really enjoyed that my husband was “assigned” to read to me a few times a week. In the hectic-ness of our life, conversation between a husband and wife can become dry and often times stressful, “can you clean that up”, “what should we have for dinner”, so it was nice to hear my husband’s voice in a purely calming and reassuring tone, this was a beautiful transformation. I began to fully trust that he would make a great birth companion.

My two favorite tracks were the “Joyful Pregnancy Affirmations” and “Fear Clearing”. Something magical happened around the time I started listening to the tracks- the migraines I had been experiencing had stopped! This was a miracle! And anytime I started to feel the beginning signs of a migraine, I listened to the “Fear Clearing” track and by morning, my head would be clear.

I haven’t even gotten to the birth yet! Just for the pregnancy alone, it was worth taking the class!

When the pressure waves began to pick up in intensity and frequency, my husband starting playing the tracks over our living room speakers. Honestly at this point I have no idea what the tracks said, but what I do know is that I clung onto everything that was being said. Between my chiro/doula “unwinding” my pelvis/sacrum and listening to the tracks, I was able to stay focused and strong. My sister, present for the birth, after everything was done commented “I couldn’t even tell if you were in pain or not!?”.

I can only remember 2 or so times through the birthing process where my thoughts shifted for a moment into “can I really do this?” and just as quickly as the thought came, I tuned back into the track and carried on. Our environment was so serene! I really felt like a mama bear giving birth in a cave. The room was dim, my birth team only spoke in soft tones, there was stillness. I moved through the dance of pressure waves for about 12 hours (from the very first to the last) then pushed in the birthing tub for about 90 minutes, then our sweet baby finally arrived! I completely honor and respect that hospital births need to happen, but for me I cannot even imagine giving birth any other way than at my home filled with peeeeeeeeeeeeace! A few days after the birth I started to recognized how much I missed listening to the tracks and began to use them again for an injured tailbone and a plugged milk duct. I am very grateful for Hypnobabies and the peace and confidence it instilled in me and my husband.

As my due day approaches, this is my only wish: to be as peaceful as it can possibly be. I am also a first time mom giving birth at home :S

Yay! It will be great. Our baby is now almost 5 months and a pretty peaceful one and I have to believe it's because of his birth!
