A common question we get from expectant parents, especially those with a higher level of anxiety about pregnancy and birth, is wondering if they are "doing" their hypnosis tracks right, especially at the beginning when they can't tell if it's "working." Sometimes they listen to a track and it's a wonderful, relaxing experience, and sometimes no matter what the anxiety and negative thoughts win and the track doesn't help them relax in that moment. Here's my answer to this common question!
Think of this a little bit like training for a marathon. You are in the early stages of your birth preparation, just like a person doing some short runs to get started. Sometimes those runs feel great and other times they feel awful and the person questions why they want to do a marathon in the first place. But over time as they follow their training plan they get stronger and stronger and running longer distances becomes easier. And then when they get to the big day they are ready because they’ve done all the preparation.
Hypnosis takes a lot of repetition to get the full effects so I have no doubt that as Hypnobabies students get further into the course and work through the program they will experience an amazing reduction in anxiety and get more and more excited about birth. They might still have fears and anxiety and that’s OK. But by the end of the Hypnobabies course they will have given themselves so many tools to achieve the easier, more comfortable, low fear, very empowering birth experience they desire!
As for the issue of finding that fears and worries keep bubbling up while listening to the tracks, distracting your focus from the positive messages, Hypnobabies students should listen to the tracks without judgment and enjoy the relaxation. Also when your mind is racing with other thoughts, listen to the voice on the track and each word she is saying. You might have to bring your attention back to her exact words again and again and that’s ok, but over time it will get easier. You can’t think about fears and focus on her words at the same time.
Enjoy the program and keep on practicing!
