My entire life I imagined my birthing time would be at a hospital using an epidural or receiving a C-section. If you would have told me that I pulled a 180 I would not have believed you. I first heard of Hypnobabies from my older sister who birthed two healthy boys using her hypnosis. For her first, I thought she was on drugs. Who in their right mind would willingly birth naturally and at a birth center nonetheless! That's not how they show it on the movies so it can't be right. For her second, I was more open to the idea of birthing naturally and was intrigued by this whole hypnosis idea. She encouraged us to look at all the options and to educate ourselves.
We had our baby boy, Rowan, at home on 1/7. We are thrilled to have experienced birthing at home and the combination of our midwife and Hypnobabies helped make our dream a reality.
I can’t point to one tool in particular because I used all of them!
My water broke at 10:40 am while making bread with my daughter and we met our baby at 7:50 pm. He weighed 9lbs 4oz.
Nick and our daughter, Ella, caught Rowan as our midwife was driving to our home. They were the best support team. Ella sang to me during my waves, held the flashlight while I pushed, and helped to cut the umbilical cord. It was a very connecting experience and we could not have wished for a better birth. Our midwife arrived a few minutes after and helped with delivering the placenta, etc.
Iris is our third daughter, which made us think we knew what to expect this time around. Well, she certainly wanted to prove us wrong!
Our older girls were each born about a week before their guess dates, so we were preparing for the same with this baby. The 39 week point came and went, still no baby. Then 40 weeks, and even 41 weeks passed! Waiting is HARD, but all of our post date evaluations were coming back fine. She was in a great position (LOA, nice and low), her movements and heart rate were healthy, I had plenty of fluid, my cervix was ripening (3-4cm, 80% effaced), and she didn’t seem to be unusually large. She was healthy and very cozy so we were prepared to wait. However, I was getting more uncomfortable each day. My hips and pelvis were so sore I was having trouble caring for my other children. So, at 41 weeks and 1 day we went in for an induction.
Tuesday night 12/4 Robert and I were out to dinner for our anniversary and I went to the bathroom to discover I had my “bloody show.” I had not had a single pressure wave at this point so I decided that it could still be a while before the baby arrived.
Wednesday morning around 3:30 AM I woke up with my first pressure wave. Unsure if the waves were going to be consistent I got up and moved to the couch and began listening to Special Safe Place. My waves were consistently between 7-10 minutes apart as soon as they began. All lasting between 45-90 seconds.
While everyone was sleeping in Saturday morning, I texted my hypno-doula, Anne, because I finally had one sign of my birthing time beginning—bloody show. I decided to listen to the Your Birthing Time Begins track and Birthing Day Affirmations (love this track) in hopes of feeling some consistent waves soon.
I went about my day as I normally would, and felt some minor pressure waves...
When I was about 20ish weeks pregnant I had a dream I was going to have my baby 8/27/18 at 3:00pm. If only it could have been a bit more specific!! I had been having strong BH waves since around 20 weeks, but I started having real practice waves a few weeks before my guess date.
With my first I had some practice waves for about 10 days before I had him so I just assumed it would be similar this time around. During all the practice waves I just knew my baby wasn’t coming until the 27th because of a dream 🤣 and these were just prepping my body for an easy and comfortable birthing time!
In the early morning of July 18th, I woke up to a trickle, and when I got out of bed I felt a gush! PROM! I ran to the bathroom and then came back in the bedroom to wake up Ryan and tell him, "Something that wasn't supposed to happen, just happened!" It was 2:30 am. I called the midwife, our doula, and my mom to tell them the news. They all said, try to get some more rest. Needless to say, we didn't get anymore sleep that night. I began listening to my Hypnobabies tracks immediately, but the anticipation of baby coming had me too excited and I just couldn't get back to sleep.
Ryan went to work at 7 am, because I was not having birthing waves yet, and he wanted to get everything done that he could before taking baby leave. I tried to rest, and continued to listen to Hypnobabies tracks.
I woke up around 1 am to a pretty strong birthing wave & realized I had been having them in my dreams. I timed them for an hour & found they were 5-7 minutes apart, lasting 1-1.5 minutes each. I woke Kurt to give him a heads up & he started trying to get a hold of his employees to have the early morning class covered.
Around 3:30 am the waves slowed down a bit so I was able to get about another hour of sleep. Kurt hadn’t heard back from his guys yet, so he got up with his 5 am alarm to go to work. The waves had started to pick back up again in intensity & spacing between, so I took a shower & started preparing to have our baby!
Th, March 29, 41 weeks and 3 days pregnant
My morning began with an exciting sign of impending birthing time, the release of my mucous plug! Being so pregnant and having experienced light practice waves for a while by then, this sign brought much hope and relief that I might meet this baby soon.
I showered and went to an early morning chiropractor appointment, complete with acupuncture. It was my first experience with the later and I must say I didn’t care for it. But if it helped get things moving that’s fine too.

I suppose Priscilla’s birth story begins at my 36-week appointment, which was July 24th. I chose to receive my care at Roots Community Birth Center in North Minneapolis. Throughout my entire pregnancy I was so impressed with the quality, love, and expertise of the staff. I had an opportunity to get to know each midwife well and felt excited as my last weeks of pregnancy drew near. At my appointment Rebecca did a brief check just to see if I had any scar tissue left from a procedure I had done earlier in the winter. To my surprise I learned that I was already 2-3cm dilated and that babe’s head was very low. I left feeling excited, but also resting in the knowledge that I could be dilated at that number for a long time, and that numbers don’t generally mean all that much so early on. Throughout the week prior I had experienced a few light waves but nothing too exciting.
