Very speedy first birth using Hypnobabies!

At 37 weeks and 2 days I woke up with a bad calf cramp on around 5:30 am and woke Darby up to help me try to stop the cramp! Since I was up, I just went to the bathroom and there was nothing out of the ordinary. But when I went to stand up I felt a little tiny pop low in my uterus. I thought, that’s strange but oh well. So I went to the kitchen to get some water and planned to go back to bed. As I was drinking water I felt a little leaking and thought, well this is strange because I just went to the bathroom. So I went back to the bathroom and realized my water broke and was slowly trickling out. There was a little light pink blood. This was around 5:50 am and I made Darby get up and come into the bathroom. I had no waves and no discomfort. I was a little nervous because I’d hoped my water wouldn’t break until later in the birth process and of course, did not want to worry about induction.
Probably 10-15 minutes later I had more blood which I think was bloody show. I think by about 6:30 am, I started feeling like I had to poop and so I did. I was also feeling a little crampy. Darby texted our hypno-doula and she suggested to listen to birthing day affirmations. I still did not feel like I was having any waves.

By close to 7 am things were starting to pick up. I think I tried a shower and tried to eat some cereal but couldn’t really do either. Darby called the midwife and they talked around 7:30 at which point I’d really started moaning and they suggested I come in to the hospital. I don’t know that all my sounds were low but I tried. I felt like things were going fast and I don’t know that I had time to be in the hypnosis but it was playing. I was really uncomfortable at that point and not sure I could make it to the car. I just kept having the urge to poop.

We made it into the car by 8 am and got to the hospital about 8:20. Darby said I had 3 waves on hwy 62 and 2 on hwy 100. He estimates they were 2-3 minutes apart and lasted 45-60 seconds. I heard myself do the moan/grunt Anne did at class and I was like, does that mean I’m pushing? Darby pulled up to the hospital and I felt like I had maybe 30 seconds to walk myself in and thankfully someone got me a wheelchair and wheeled me to the birth center...my eyes were shut for most of that. Darby said they wheeled me straight to triage and I got on the bed on all 4s. He said the nurse told me not to push and I said I couldn’t help it. I think they pushed me on that bed into the birth room around 8:40. At 8:45 they checked me and said I was complete! I pushed in a few positions and Koby arrived at 10:57am. I don’t know how much of the hypnosis I heard, but I was able to relax in between waves.

I have to say, it was hard for me to figure out waves as it mostly felt like I had to push the whole time. It was definitely intense and not comfortable for me, but I always felt present and trusted my body, and I got to have the birth I ultimately wanted (though never made it to the tub), and it was faster than I ever thought it could be!

I have to say that I’ve used the Hypnobabies tracks a lot since Koby’s birth to help me sleep since it’s sometimes hard to fall asleep on command when he’s sleeping. I’m very thankful for the class, and while everything happened so fast and I don’t know that I ever felt I was in hypnosis, I was able to relax at times which was good.

Editor/Instructor Note: It's common for first time moms to wonder if they were actually "in" hypnosis especially when their birth goes so fast! Birth is so intense and fast births can be even more intense! After the six weeks of class the tools are so deeply installed in the subconscious they are working whether someone is conscious of it or not. That's the whole point! You become an expert in hypnosis and the tools are helping even if you aren't consciously using the techniques in the moment. That is exactly how so many hypno-moms have faster and easier births than they would have without the Hypnobabies hypnosis techniques!
